Statement on Guilty Verdicts In the Derek Chauvin Trial
April 20, 2021
"It really says something that the outcome in the trial of Derek Chauvin was so uncertain. We are a nation used to unchecked police abuse, violence, corruption, and murder.
While the verdict brings some small relief to George Floyd’s community, it will not stop harm at the hands of police. This verdict cannot be a substitute for systemic accountability - which is the minimum we deserve from the people who represent our 'justice' and 'legal' systems. Black and brown people should not have to die on national TV for us to muster the political will to finally confront the racism embedded in policing.
We all deserve systems of justice and public safety that are fair, accountable, but most importantly, meet the needs of our community. And if our current systems can’t produce that, then it’s time to build different ones."
